Costa Rica Senior Travel Guide
While traditionally marketed as a retirement haven , Costa Rica has quietly become a sought-after destination for those over 55, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility.
It makes senseāNorth America and Europe's populations are aging, with fewer young people and even fewer who can afford to travel. āSilver tourists,ā those over 55, are more numerous and affluent than ever. They're living longer, staying healthy, and have more disposable income than younger generations. This is why the āsilver economyā is a real concept, and āsilver tourismā is part of it. And Costa Rica is no exception.
In the sections below, we'll explore why Costa Rica is a perfect spot for senior tourists. Don't be put off by the adventurous image: many of the pioneering surfers, rafters, and adventure seekers who first explored Costa Rica in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s are now well into old age and still going strong. So, whether you're a Silver Surfer or someone who just wants to take it easy, Costa Rica has something for you. Let's take a closer look.
Why is Costa Rica Great for Senior Travel?
Costa Rica is great for all travelers, no matter what age. Whether you want to experience nature up-close in an eco-sustainable trip , head out for a day of adventure , spend a relaxing afternoon at the beach , or plunge yourself into the deep blue sea for some of the best fishing in the world, the unique charms of Costa Rica are for everyone. And if youāre a traveler with a specific set of needs or a particular type of travel style, your trip can be tailored for you easily. Costa Rica offers all sorts of possibilities, so these are some of the reasons why Costa Rica is specifically great for senior travelers:
Year-Round Appeal
Costa Rica is an ideal year-round destination, providing flexibility for older travelers who are not bound by school holidays. Depending on when you travel, there might be some sweet deals available too.
Health and Medical Tourism
With excellent healthcare facilities, Costa Rica has established itself as a hub for medical and dental tourism, ensuring quality care for mature travelers.
Safety and Security
In comparison to many regional destinations, Costa Rica stands out for its overall safety , especially in tourist areas.
Plenty of Activities
Costa Rica offers a diverse range of activities , catering to the desires of older travelers looking to fulfill long-desired bucket list items.
Luxurious and Comfortable Accommodations
The growth of luxury accommodations has transformed the hospitality landscape in Costa Rica, with options ranging from large all-inclusive resorts to boutique eco-hotels , home rentals, and condo developments. Put simply, Costa Rica is no longer solely a "backpacker's paradise". From its discovery by backpackers and surfers in the 1960s and 70s, Costa Rica has evolved into a tourist hotspot, with options becoming more accommodating and catering to a broader demographic.
Generational Respect
Unlike some parts of the world, Costa Ricans hold great respect for the elderly, and itās one of their cultural landmarks. Older individuals are welcomed and treated well, with numerous perks like free or discounted bus travel, as well as discounts on museums and national parks. Seniors are called ciudadanos de oro (āgolden citizensā), which reflects the cultural value placed on the elderly in Costa Rica, further enhancing the positive experience for senior travelers.
Taking these points into consideration, it's clear that this country is ready and willing to receive you. As with everywhere else, there might still be a few challenges for elderly travelers in Costa Rica, no matter how welcoming and well-intentioned the country is. Being aware and prepared will make your journey better, so we'll look at these right now.
Possible Challenges Faced by Senior Tourists in Costa Rica
While Costa Rica welcomes and reveres seniors, it's not all rosy. Costa Rica is still a developing country and often infrastructure is not up to the standards the country is striving for. Those with mobility issues might find Costa Rica's cracked and uneven streets difficult to get around, for example. Ramps and other facilities to aid easy walking are mandated by law, but absent in various places. Most hotels and modes of transportation will accommodate you well, but you wonāt find these aids everywhere.
Below, we list some other challenges that tourists might face while in Costa Rica, and how they might affect specifically senior travelers:
Terrain Accessibility
The diverse landscapes of Costa Rica, including rainforests and mountainous areas, can present challenges for those with mobility issues. While many activities are accessible, some hiking trails, beaches, and attractions can be challenging due to uneven terrain, steep inclines, or lack of paved paths. As stated above, city sidewalks in Costa Rica are also hazardous in many places. Asking a local expert can greatly help you plan around these, so make sure to give us a call if you have any questions.
Language Issues
Although many Costa Ricans in tourist areas speak English, some remote locations may have limited English speakers. This can be a challenge for seniors who don't speak Spanish. Try to brush up on some Spanish phrases or get a translation app if you think youāll feel more confident that way.
Healthcare
Most major cities in Costa Rica have excellent healthcare facilities, but outside the Central Valley, medical resources are often more limited. Seniors with specific health needs should plan their itinerary with access to healthcare in mind. Before travel, consult a doctor about travel vaccinations and medications needed for the trip. We also recommend having adequate travel insurance to cover any healthcare emergencies.
Accommodations
Not all hotels or rental properties are wheelchair-friendly or equipped with grab bars and other assistive features. Many resorts have lots of steps to navigate and no elevators. Asking ahead (especially to someone whoās been there personally) can clear out those questions for you.
Climate and Altitude
Costa Rica's diverse climate may pose challenges for those with respiratory issues. High-altitude destinations may require acclimatization, and the humidity could be uncomfortable for some. The tropical sun in Costa Rica is intense, and requires proper protection and hydration to avoid heat stroke or sunburn.
Transportation Challenges
Thereās no guarantee public transportation will have adequate accommodations for seniors. Steep steps and lack of ramps can be difficult for those with mobility issues. Renting a car or hiring private transportation with proper facilities might be necessary. In any case, itās the way we always recommend traveling: itās more personalized, it allows you to go on your own rhythm, and it offers door-to-door transportation.
Adaption to Local Customs
Understanding and adapting to local customs and norms can sometimes be a challenge, particularly for those who may not be familiar with the cultural nuances of Costa Rica. However, itās not impossible to overcome. Keep an open mind and heart and youāll find many Costa Ricans happy to share their culture with you and learn from yours.
Currency and Financial Transactions
Currency is not the huge deal it used to be in todayās virtually cashless society, but some seniors might find currency exchange and various financial transactions challenging. This is especially true in more rural areas where credit cards may not be widely accepted.
Communication
In the event of an emergency, communication might be challenging if youāre not prepared ahead of time. Some places in Costa Rica have little phone signal, for example. Having a reliable means of communication and knowing emergency contact numbers is crucial.
It's important to note that the challenges listed above, especially those not related to mobility and ease of getting around, can be faced by any traveler or any age. Despite these challenges, with proper planning, flexibility, and awareness, most seniors enjoy wonderful experiences in Costa Rica.
And remember, working with a travel agency like us can eliminate most of these challenges immediately. Here's how:

Planning Your Trip to Costa RIca
Some things to consider for senior travelers planning a Costa Rican vacation:
Best Time To Visit
For seniors with time on their hands, planning a trip to Costa Rica is a breeze, especially if already retired. Not being tied down to work or school term commitments makes the calendar your oyster. Oftentimes family vacationers find themselves shoehorned into specific timeframes like the Christmas Holidays, spring break, or the summer holidays. This creates a funnel effect where everyone's coming at once, accommodation space diminishes, and prices shoot up. Most senior travelers do not have that problem and can travel at better times of the year.
So what are the better times of the year? Well, climate-wise, the dry season runs from December to April, during which time you can expect hot and sunny weather in most parts of the country with very little rain. July, August, September, and October count as the rainy season, although even then there are variances, and one shouldn't expect rain all the time.
The months of May/June and November/December are the "cusp" months, where the seasons transition. They go from dry to rainy in May/June and from rainy to dry in November/December. Our personal favorite months are generally these transitional months, although it depends what you're looking for.
During these transitional months, you get mostly sunny weather with the chance of a light shower to take the edge off the heat in the afternoons. It's a perfect time for comfortable weather. January is also good, especially on the Pacific side, as cooling breezes temper the all-day sunshine. We go into all this in much more detail elsewhere on this site, on our best time to visit page , with a month-by-month guide on what to expect.
Understanding Costa Rica's Geography
Like Costa Rica's climate, Costa Rica's geography is varied and has something for every kind of traveler, regardless of age. It's worth taking a quick look around the country to see how, in the most general way, various regions may affect senior travelers planning their trip:
Central Valley
The Central Valley is home to the capital city, San JosƩ , and is surrounded by lush mountains, volcanoes, and rural communities. It has a mild climate, making it an ideal base for exploring other regions. A stay here offers a range of cultural attractions including museums, theater, and shopping. It's also great for exploring nearby coffee farms. Seniors seeking a mix of urban and rural experience with a true taste of Costa Rica should consider spending some time here.
Central Pacific Coast
Easily accessible from the main international airport near San José (SJO), the Central Pacific coast offers beautiful beaches and rainforests. There are vibrant beach towns like Jacó , fishing and golfing communities like Los Sueños , and easy-to-navigate national parks like Manuel Antonio . For senior travelers seeking some beach time during their trip, this part of the country is perfect.
Southern Pacific Coast
This is a little harder to get to and often requires a domestic flight (especially the Osa Peninsula itself, where Corcovado National Park is). It's remote and gorgeous, attracting ecotourists and hikers who want to explore the natural surroundings. Although not necessarily the best part of Costa Rica for those with health or mobility issues, it's still possible to have a seamless experience with good planning, and itās perfect for nature lovers in tip-top health.
Guanacaste
Seniors looking for an easy beach vacation in Costa Rica might well find Guanacaste, on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, their best bet. Most main locations are less than an hour from the Guanacaste International Airport (LIR) and here's where you'll find most of the brand-name beach hotels and all-inclusive resorts , many of them senior-friendly and equipped with the facilities to serve the most mobility-limited.
Caribbean Coast
Like the Southern Pacific coast, this part of Costa Rica is remote and takes a while to get to. Known for its Afro-Caribbean culture, lush rainforests, and beautiful beaches, it's a beautiful part of the country and well worth visiting, especially in October when the weather is at its best. Those with difficult health issues, however, may need to consider the lack of easy access to the best medical facilities in the country.
Arenal
Known as the adventure capital of Costa Rica, this area is dominated by the Arenal Volcano and itās famous for its hot springs, rainforests, and activities like hiking, rafting, and zip lining. Seniors ready for anything can participate in all these activities and more. Those seeking a more sedate experience can enjoy the different hot springs available and easy-going nature excursions.
Monteverde
This highland region is visited for its cloud forests, offering unique flora and fauna to ecotourists. It's all about nature walks and exploring natural reserves. Many of the trails are easy for those with decent mobility, but we recommend some level of physical fitness. Be prepared for cooler temperatures and sometimes uneven terrain.
Top Tips for Choosing the Right Destination
By understanding Costa Rica's geography and its suitability for different senior travelers, you can plan a tailor-made experience that fosters adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. Here are three key tips to also take into account:
- Consider Your Interests and Abilities. Choose activities and experiences that match your physical abilities and preferences.
- Prioritize Accessibility. Look for well-developed infrastructure, senior-friendly accommodations, and convenient transportation options.
- Balance Relaxation and Adventure. Combine scenic walks and wildlife-watching with occasional adrenaline-inducing activities and enough time to relax by the pool.
Remember, always research specific destinations (we're on hand to help you do that) and consult medical professionals if necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Costa Rica.
Recommended Trip Duration
How long you stay in Costa Rica really depends on how much time you have and your budget. If you're retired, with unlimited time and zero commitments, you could feasibly come for months if you wanted to.
Most people coming from North America come for a week and up to ten days. We recommend at least a week for people wanting to visit at least two or three destinations. For those coming for less than a week, we recommend staying in one destination, normally at the beach. Travelers coming from Europe generally stay in Costa Rica for at least two weeks, simply because of the travel time involved. It all depends on what you want to do and see. Contact us to discuss your options.
Health and Safety Tips for Seniors in Costa Rica
We all reach a certain age where we realize our physical limitations and become more conscious of our personal health. This is a concern It means that many seniors, when traveling, will have concerns and things to think about that younger travelers wouldn't even consider (yet). Here are some tips:
Before the Trip
Consult your Doctor
Discuss your planned activities and destinations with your doctor to ensure your trip is safe and enjoyable. Ensure you have any prescription medicines you need and have a list of generic names for that medicine in case you run outāyou might find that it's over-the-counter in Costa Rica. Ask if any pre-existing conditions you might have will be affected by the climate, altitude, or activities.
Be Insured
Take out travel insurance that covers any potential medical emergencies and possible evacuation.
Pack Smart
Bring medications in original packaging with a doctor's note, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, a first-aid kit, and any necessary assistive devices.
Stay Informed
Research health concerns and safety updates for your chosen destinations. Costa Rica is pretty safe and it has a robust public health system, so there arenāt any major issues to watch out for, but if you have specific needs or concerns, itās important to double-check.
During the Trip
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during physical activity. Many people underestimate the heat and humidity of the tropics, so make sure to always carry your water.
Sun Protection
Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear a hat, and seek shade between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Once again, sometimes people trust that during a cloudy day the sun wonāt hit as hard, but this is a common mistake. Always protect yourself.
Food and Water Safety
This isn't a major problem in Costa Rica, but if you have a sensitive stomach, stick to bottled water, avoid uncooked food from street vendors, and choose reputable restaurants. Every hotel you find on this website has a reputable restaurant.
Be Cautious with Wildlife
Don't feed or approach wild animals, and be aware of potential hazards like crocodiles or snakes in certain areas.
Pace Yourself
Don't overexert yourself. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed.
Know the Location of Medical Facilities
Familiarize yourself with the locations of medical facilities and hospitals at your travel destinations. Larger cities like San JosƩ offer advanced healthcare services.
Be Mindful of the Terrain
Many natural attractions in Costa Rica have uneven terrain and/or lots of steps. Wear comfortable, supportive footwear and use walking aids if necessary. Research destinations in advance for accessibility.
Use Reputable Transportation Services
Opt for reputable transportation services that prioritize safety. Choose well-maintained vehicles with reliable, English-speaking drivers.
Secure Your Belongings
Keep your belongings secure to prevent theft. Use a money belt or neck pouch for important documents and valuables and stay alert in public places. Keep valuables in your hotel safe and never leave anything in a rental car.
Take Precautions against Insects
Use insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes. Consider lightweight long-sleeved clothing in the evenings.
Most of this information also applies to travelers of all ages and abilities. The main points concerning seniors involve healthcare and listening to your body in terms of activities and exertion. But being aware, planning ahead, and taking precautions can ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation to Costa Rica for the young and mature alike.
Best Lodging Options for Seniors in Costa Rica
Choosing where to stay is a big decision for every traveler. Options are wide and varied and all offer unique experiences. Travelers with mobility issues of varying degrees often need to put extra thought when considering where to stay. Many hotels in Costa Rica, due to sheer topography alone, might not be suitable for senior travelers with limited mobility.
Below, we list some of our favorite hotels that can cater to senior travelers and others who maybe can't get around as easy as they used to:
- Tabacon Resort (Arenal)
- Royal Corin (Arenal)
- Arenal Manoa (Arenal)
- The Springs Resort (Arenal)
- Volcano Lodge (Arenal)
- Shana by the Beach (Manuel Antonio)
- El Parador (Manuel Antonio)

- Los SueƱos Marriott (Los SueƱos Resort on the Central Pacific coast)
- Gran Hotel Costa Rica (San JosƩ)
These are just a few places offering excellent support to senior travelers who need assistance. Also note that most of the main-chain hotels in Costa Rica like the Marriott, Best Western, and similar are also good on this aspect. Again, speak to us if you have specific needs when selecting a hotel and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Best Transportation Options for Seniors
Getting around Costa Rica as a senior is just as important as figuring out where to stay. As we mentioned earlier, while the culture itself is welcoming, public transportation amenities are often not so much. Buses, the main public way of getting around the country, are often jam-packed and difficult to get on and off for people with limited mobility. You'll always find a seat, though. By law, some seats are set aside for seniors and pregnant women. And even if those arenāt available, most Costa Ricans will stand up and offer you their seat if you're a senior citizen. It's just the getting on and off that's the problem.
The best way to counter these issues is to rent a car or use private transfers. Both options are readily available and easy to arrange. Renting a car is a great choice for travelers seeking their independence to go wherever they like whenever they like. Read more on our car rental page , as it's certainly not for everyone. Those seeking a more sedate way to get around should use private transfers. You'll have a transfer van and an English-speaking driver guide who will take you between destinations. You can stop on the way for food, photos, or whatever you want.
Travelers getting off the beaten path might want to opt for domestic flights. This is also a great way to get around Costa Rica fast, although there are luggage limitation issues involved. Get all the details on our domestic flights page .

When it comes to things to do in Costa Rica , the sky's the limit. If you're fit and healthy, you're pretty much good to go for anything from zip lining to whitewater rafting to hiking and more.
