Rental Homes vs Hotels
As travel consultants, we often receive inquiries about vacation rentals from people unsure if itās better than a hotel. Every guest is different, and it's crucial to consider some key factors when deciding whether a rental home is suitable for you or if youād prefer a hotel or resort setting instead.
Typically, itās larger groups of family or friends seeking accommodation under one roof who ask us about rentals. The per-person cost can also be attractive when you break down the nightly rate by your guest list and compare it to traditional hotel rooms. While rentals are great options in Costa Rica, you should keep a few things in mind that can directly impact your vacation experience:
Check the Location of Your Vacation Rental in Costa Rica
This is vital! Costa Rica is a small country, and on maps, everything appears close. However, many rental properties are located on side streets, dirt roads, or on remote mountain properties. While they may seem easy to access, the logistics and proximity to key amenities could mean travel times of 30 minutes, an hour, or even longer. Do your research and use Waze or Google Maps to obtain more accurate drive times for the properties.
Vacation Rental Travel Logistics
How do you get there? Do you need a rental car? Will you have access to the key attractions you want from this home? These are all things you need to ask and research. For most rental homes, especially with larger groups, you will want a rental car. This adds to your vacation cost, and many times you might need two or three cars just to fit your guests and luggage. However, driving in a foreign country can be challenging if youāre not used to it, especially in the rainy season. You might also need a 4x4, as many homes are way off the beaten path, on bad roads.
You also need to consider what you want to see and do. Rentals are great for single-destination trips, meaning you arrive, settle into the home, and use it as your home base. But as we said, Costa Rica is larger than might appear on a map, and staying in one place usually means missing out on other places. Visiting beaches, cloud forests, rainforests, and volcanoes from one central area doesn't really work. So if you want to explore the country and several key destinations, a rental might not be the right choice.
The same goes for tours. If you have a list of activities you want to do, many tour operators will not service all rental home locations. The home might be out of route for their pick-ups, too far to service, or located on inaccessible roads where their vans canāt reach. This highlights the need for 4x4 rental cars, leaving you to figure out where you need to go and be on time to enjoy an activity.
A rental home, unless in a resort community, also means more work for your party. By "work," we mean: who is cooking, who is going grocery shopping, do you have cleaning staff, do you have to pay for cleaning, or do it yourself? Oftentimes, thatās fine: thereās a great level of independence in this type of vacation. But itās also true that many visitors want to escape all those domestic tasks. Whatās your preference? Some great rental homes in resort communities like Los SueƱos offer full-service amenities, giving you the best of both worlds.
Risks and Precautions
It's also important to talk about the general risks rentals face globally, especially in countries with weaker rental regulations. Letās discuss them below:
High-Security Deposits
Even when booking through sites like Airbnb or VRBO, it's common for rental homes to request a security deposit upon arrival. While it's not ideal, it's a standard practice that can be inconvenient, particularly when you're eager to settle into your home away from home.
Security
Costa Rica is generally considered safe, with many rental homes located within communities providing security and protection from potentially unwanted visitors. However, due to the lack of stringent regulations, there are occasional reports of theft and other security concerns. While these incidents can be unsettling, it's important to note that they are relatively rare. To minimize potential risks, consider properties in developments or neighborhoods with on-site security.
Maintenance Issues
In US vacation rentals, maintenance is usually easy. Handymen are readily available, and homeowners are often nearby to help. But with international rentals, it's different. If the home isn't managed by a professional company, getting help can be tough. Owners may be out of the country, making it hard to fix issues quickly. To avoid problems, look for homes with on-site or local management.
What You See Is Not Always What You Get
Pictures can sometimes paint a rosier picture than reality, and descriptions may not always tell the full story. In Costa Rica, for example, a major selling point for many homes is the breathtaking views. But there can be tradeoffs or clever photography that doesn't show the whole picture. It's important to consider the actual location of the home, the logistical challenges it may present, and how you'll navigate once you're there.
Last-Minute Cancellations and Limited Availability during Peak Travel Weeks
Travel forums and Facebook Groups are riddled with last-minute cancellation stories during high season, when youāre suddenly notified by your host that the place you rented is no longer available. Sometimes this happens just before you arrive, leaving you scrambling to find something, often paying double or triple the price as thereās almost nothing left on the market.
Risks of Homes Being Sold
Picture thisāyou've meticulously planned your dream vacation, only to learn your reservation was canceled because the home was sold. Sadly, this scenario is increasingly common in hot real estate markets around Latin America, including Costa Rica. To minimize such risks, we prioritize homes managed by reputable companies. If a property is sold, weāll find alternatives. While online sites try to address these issues, compensation can't fully make up for lost time and effort. Rearranging flights and plans adds to the frustration.
Rental homes are certainly a great way to enjoy Costa Rica, but it's essential to be aware of some concerns due to the lack of regulation and consumer protection.
Benefits and Advantages
That all said, rental homes in Costa Rica also come with their own set of distinct advantages that differ from those offered by hotels or resorts:
Freedom and Privacy
While resorts and communities have their appeal, many vacationers seek to escape crowds and constant interaction during their time off. Rental homes offer a chance to experience a quieter pace of life while on vacation. Discovering a property that perfectly matches your vision of an ideal home or retirement lifestyle is truly enticing.
Value
Hotel prices are rising due to high operational costs and curated services. Even renting a multi-million-dollar property, which can often resemble a private resort, can be more economical than booking several hotel rooms, especially for larger groups. Even at higher prices, splitting the cost per room often makes rentals a more affordable option compared to hotels.
Uniqueness
While luxury resorts and popular hotels are readily available, finding something truly distinctive is becoming increasingly challenging. Rental homes in exotic destinations offer exceptionally unique properties that create lasting memories.
Test Drive the Idea of Living Abroad
Staying in a rental allows for a close-to-reality experience while on vacation. Many travelers try rentals and end up returning to buy real estate. Exploring local life, from grocery stores to markets, gives a taste of what living abroad might be like. Experiencing it on vacation makes it easier to decide if living abroad is right for you.
Costa Rica's Hotel Scene
Costa Rica's hotels offer tailored experiences for various travelers, providing convenience and personalized attention. Ideal for those seeking comfort and ease during their vacation.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, many vacationers prefer not to "work" during their time off. The thought of driving, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning is the last thing on their minds. Hotels offer an escape from these responsibilities, providing value, luxury, and service. For those who prefer making decisions and having staff cater to their needs, hotels are the ideal vacation setting. Everything, from security to dining and entertainment, is conveniently available at hotels and resorts, making for a stress-free getaway.
The Best of Both Worlds
Another great option is to rent a home within a resort-style development. Often, these developments offer all the amenities of a hotel while retaining the privacy of a home.
