What to Expect at Río Celeste

Discover a river with bright blue waters

Enjoy a Hike on the Río Celeste

You might have seen photos of the Río Celeste and wondered if they could possibly be real. The dazzling shade of blue looks almost otherworldly. Local legend explains it by saying that God painted the sky and then washed his paintbrushes in the river, leaving behind the incredible turquoise waters we see today.

The journey to Río Celeste takes you into the Tenorio Volcano National Park, where trails wind through primary and secondary rainforest filled with sweeping views, bubbling hot springs, and volcanic vents. Along the way, you’ll discover natural wonders like Los Borbollones, a site where volcanic gases bubble up through the water and fill the air with the smell of sulfur, and Laguna Azul, a still, brilliantly blue pool that looks like something out of a fairytale. The most magical stop of all is El Teñidero, the place where two clear rivers merge and, through a chemical reaction with volcanic minerals, instantly transform into the turquoise waters of Río Celeste before your eyes.

A Moderate Hiking Experience

The hike itself is moderate, about four miles round trip. Trails vary from paved sections to dirt paths with roots and rocks, and there are around 150 steep steps leading down to the waterfall. Guides are skilled at spotting wildlife along the way and will often point out monkeys, exotic birds, or the tracks of more elusive animals as you make your way toward the river.

The highlight of the trail is the Río Celeste Waterfall. After descending a long staircase, you’ll be rewarded with the unforgettable sight of a 98-foot cascade plunging into a pool of shockingly blue water, framed by dense green rainforest. It’s one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Costa Rica and an awe-inspiring place to pause and take it all in.

Because of its volcanic origins, the park’s environment changes with the seasons. From October through December, heavier rains can muddy the trail and dilute the lagoon, softening its color. Still, after a night of heavy rain, the river usually regains its brilliant hue by the following morning. Regardless of the season, Río Celeste remains one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful natural attractions and a must-see for anyone in this part of the country.
