Enjoy a La Fortuna Waterfall HIke!
La Fortuna Waterfall is one of Costa Rica's most beatiful and easily accessible natural attractions. This spectacular waterfall drops some 70 to 75 meters into a deep, bright blue pool that invites visitors to swim when conditions allow.
Reaching the waterfall involves a hike down a well-maintained trail consisting of over 500 steps down the hillside. The descent generally takes around 10 to 20 minutes, with handrails and resting areas along the way to help make the journey manageable for most people. Though the descent is relatively straightforward, the climb back up is more strenuous, requiring a reasonable level of fitness. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the uphill trek on their return. At the base of the waterfall, there are vantage points to admire the cascading water, as well as an area to swim in the pool or the calmer parts of the river. However, swimming near the waterfall's direct cascade is restricted for safety reasons.
The entire 210-acre biological reserve that houses La Fortuna Waterfall is part of the broader Arenal Volcano National Park and is managed sustainably by a local nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation and community development. Visitor facilities at the top of the trail down include restrooms, showers, lockers, a cafƩ, and a gift shop.
