Incredible Experience of Wildlife & Birdwatching.

Rate per person $83

This wonderful boat trip is an incredible experience for anyone wishing to get up close and personal with a huge variety of different wildlife and birds of Costa Rica! Your day begins when you are picked up from your hotel in Arenal Volcano area and driven two hours to a small town called Los Chiles, in a remote part of Costa Rica just four kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. Once you arrive at Los Chiles you will board a small covered motorized boat and enjoy a three-hour river tour along the Rio Frio, which is part of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Rio Frio is a slow-flowing river winding through canyons towards the Caño Negro lake where you will pass tropical rainforest, pastures, and marshland.

Along the shores of the Rio Frio you should be able to spot three different types of monkeys (spider, white-faced, and howler), three-toed sloth, caimans, turtles, and ‘Jesus Christ’ lizards. There are also around 200 species of migratory and resident birds to be spotted, like the glossy Ibis, black-necked stilt, anhinga, American widgeon, Northern shoveler, wood stork, white ibis, black-bellied whistling duck, snail kite, green backed heron, and blue-winged teal. It is also one of the best places to see the Nicaraguan grackle and the endangered jabirus. Your guide will be a wealth of information as they point out different animals and birds along the way and teach you about the ecological history of the area.

After your boat ride, enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch at the tour operator’s restaurant before heading back to your hotel in Arenal.

Age limitation: Available for all ages; however, it may be tedious for younger children to sit in a boat for three hours.
