Why Is Costa Rica a Good Place to Visit?

From the weather to the culture, the wildlife and the adventure, there are more reasons to visit Costa Rica than you think.

Costa Rica: A Popular Vacation Destination

Costa Rica is by far the most popular vacation destination in Central America, and for very good reason. Costa Rica is known for being a small country packed with rainforests, beaches, and nature. Famous for its biodiversity and commitment to sustainability, this small nation has garnered global attention in recent years—it was voted Travel + Leisure's Destination of the Year for 2024, something that surprises no one who's ever visited.

Nature lovers, surfers, fishing enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and tropical sun fans all know Costa Rica as a prime vacation destination. But like everywhere else, there are pros and cons.

In this article, we'll outline the positives and negatives of travel to Costa Rica. By offering a balanced perspective, we’ll equip you with the insights you need to make informed decisions about your vacation plans.

Eight Reasons to Visit Costa Rica in Your Next Vacation

Eight Reasons to Visit Costa Rica in Your Next Vacation

We'll begin with the main pros and advantages of visiting Costa Rica. After all, we live here and have been promoting Costa Rica as a vacation destination since 1999. Costa Rica is worth visiting for many reasons, and below, we list our favorite eight motivations to choose Costa Rica:

1. Costa Rica’s Climate

Costa Rica has a tropical climate, making it an appealing destination for travelers seeking year-round warm weather. There are two distinct seasons: the dry season (December to April) and the rainy season (May to November). During the dry season, visitors can expect plenty of hot sunshine and minimal rainfall, ideal for outdoor activities. The rainy season brings more frequent showers, particularly in the afternoons, but also contributes to the lush greenery that defines the region. Overall, Costa Rica's climate offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy pleasant temperatures and varied natural beauty throughout the year.

2. Natural Landmarks of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is famous for the diverse range of natural landscapes it offers, and most visitors are struck by the sheer physical beauty of the place. From lush rainforests teeming with wildlife to Pacific and Caribbean beaches backed by jungles or lined with coconut palms, Costa Rica offers something for everyone. Travelers can explore active volcanoes, hidden waterfalls, remote national parks, highland cloud forests, and more. There are endless opportunities in Costa Rica for exploration and discovery.

3. Wildlife and Biodiversity

Perhaps Costa Rica's most famous attribute is its access to nature, making it a perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Despite its small size, the country hosts around 5% of the world's biodiversity. From toucans and macaws to tapirs, big cats, sloths, and monkeys, Costa Rica's rainforests and cloud forests teem with life. Some 28% of Costa Rica is protected in the form of national parks and wildlife reserves, and the country is an eco-tourism and conservation pioneer. Whether exploring cloud forests, jungles, mangrove swamps, or coral reefs, visitors to Costa Rica have unparalleled opportunities to get back to nature.

4. Cultural Experiences and Ticos: The People of Costa Rica

Costa Rica's culture is characterized by the warmth and friendliness of its people. In fact, most of our clients tell us it's the people of Costa Rica who made their vacation stand out more than anything else. Costa Ricans—known as Ticos—are famous for their welcoming nature and laid-back attitude, summed up by the national catchphrase of Pura Vida ("pure life"). Visitors can soak up the local culture in a number of ways, including exploring the cuisine, visiting local coffee farms, or volunteering in community projects.

5. Adventure and Outdoor Activities

Costa Rica offers a wide range of adventure activities, making it an ideal destination for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. From zip-lining through cloud forest canopies or hiking up volcanoes to rafting down rushing rainforest rivers, there's no shortage of adrenaline-pumping experiences to be had. Surfers will enjoy pounding waves on both coasts, while anglers will love getting offshore to find big gamefish. Costa Rica's diverse terrain also lends itself to activities like mountain biking, waterfall rappelling, ATV tours, and horseback riding. Adventurers of all levels can find all the excitement they need in Costa Rica.

6. Wellness and Relaxation

Travelers interested in a more relaxed, sedate experience will also love Costa Rica. In recent years, Costa Rica has become a hotspot for wellness-centered travel, with a growing number of retreats, spas, yoga centers, and eco-lodges providing environments for relaxation and self-care. Aside from yoga and meditation, visitors will particularly love therapeutic activities like soaking in thermal springs or volcanic mud baths. And then, of course, there are the beaches and resorts. It's perfectly possible to come to Costa Rica and just spend your time relaxing poolside or next to the ocean—for many, that sounds quite perfect!

7. Costa Rica’s Commitment to Sustainability and Conservation

Costa Rica is known for its reputation as a global leader in environmental conservation and sustainable practices. The country prioritizes renewable energy sources, with much of its electricity generated from hydropower, wind, and geothermal energy. As stated above, there's an extensive network of national parks and protected areas, preserving Costa Rica's rich biodiversity and natural habitats. Costa Rica also strives to engrain eco-friendly practices across tourism and other sectors, with initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental impact. From sustainable tourism certifications to reforestation programs, Costa Rica actively promotes eco-conscious practices and responsible stewardship of its natural resources.

8. Convenient Location and Easy Travel

Costa Rica's proximity to North America makes it a convenient destination for travelers from the United States and Canada. Located just a few hours by air from major cities in North America, such as Miami, New York, and Toronto, Costa Rica offers easy and relatively affordable travel options. Direct flights are available from numerous North American airports to both of Costa Rica's main international airports. The country's small size also means that once travelers arrive, they can quickly and easily get to their desired destinations around the country. These factors make Costa Rica an attractive choice for those seeking a tropical getaway without the hassle of long-distance travel.

Tips and Tricks for First-Time Visitors when Planning a Trip to Costa Rica

Tips and Tricks for First-Time Visitors when Planning a Trip to Costa Rica

These are our top things to watch out for.

Figuring Out the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

Figuring out the best time to visit Costa Rica requires two considerations to make: the weather and what you want to see/do. The December to April dry season, particularly January to April, is generally considered the best time to visit, with sunny skies and minimal rainfall making it ideal for outdoor activities and beach vacations.

On the other hand, the rainy season brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds, making it a great time to explore Costa Rica's rainforests and take advantage of lower prices. Heavy rainfall, however, especially in September and October, can sometimes lead to road closures and limited accessibility to certain areas.

Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on your preferences and priorities. If you prioritize sunny weather and beach time, aim for the dry season. But if you're more interested in wildlife viewing, lower prices, and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the rainy season. It's also wise to research the microclimates of specific regions you plan to visit to ensure the best possible experience during your Costa Rica vacation.

What to Expect and How to Prepare for Your Trip to Costa Rica

When preparing for your trip to Costa Rica, there are several considerations to keep in mind. First, pack light, breathable clothing suitable for warm temperatures, along with sturdy footwear for activities like hiking and exploring. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen and insect repellent, which are both expensive in Costa Rica.

In terms of health and safety, it's advisable to consult with your healthcare provider regarding any necessary vaccinations or medications before traveling. Be cautious of mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria by using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk.

Regarding cultural norms, like anywhere else, it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Ticos are friendly, welcoming, and easy-going, so you won't have issues if you just act in a regular, nice, normal way. It's always polite to greet people with a friendly "hola" and "buenos dĆas/buenas tardes/buenas noches" (good morning/afternoon/evening). Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated, especially in restaurants and for tour guides. Lastly, be mindful of your belongings and surroundings to avoid petty theft, particularly in crowded tourist areas.

Cons of Visiting Costa Rica

Now it's time to flip the coin and talk about the cons of visiting Costa Rica—the reasons why you might want to consider another destination. As we said already, we live in Costa Rica and love it here. But no place on earth is perfect, and it's important to provide some balanced perspective. The fact we live and work here also gives us unique insight into what the biggest drawbacks of a vacation here are. Below are some reasons to maybe give Costa Rica a swerve:

Cost of Travel

There's no doubt about it and no way to sugarcoat it. Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America, both in terms of living here and coming here on vacation. In fact, traveling to Costa Rica can pose a significant disadvantage for budget-conscious travelers.

Accommodation prices tend to be higher than in neighboring countries. Additionally, dining out and activities like tours, adventure excursions, and entrance fees to national parks can add up quickly, contributing to the overall expense of the trip.

One reason for the higher costs in Costa Rica is its popularity as a tourist destination, leading to increased demand for services and accommodations. It's a small country and there's limited space. High import taxes also play a role, with high tariffs on many goods entering the country, which increase costs at the consumer level. It doesn't help that Costa Rica relies on imports for a large part of its consumer goods. On top of these factors, Costa Rica's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices often translates into higher operating costs for businesses, which are then passed on to visitors.

While it's possible to do Costa Rica in a budget-friendly way, by staying in hostels, eating in cheaper local restaurants called "sodas", or using accommodations with their own kitchens and cooking yourself, travelers should be prepared to be surprised at how spendy Costa Rica can be. If money is an object, they should research and plan carefully to stretch their budget.

Alternative destinations in Central America like Nicaragua or Guatemala may offer more affordable options for those seeking similar experiences without the hefty price tag. Another set of good news is, we can also help with those! If you contact us, we can help you figure out what your best option is.

Concerns about Crime

While Costa Rica is not a dangerous country for tourists, it's not crime-free either, and travelers should be aware of that and of the need to take some basic precautions. While violent Costa Rica’s crime rates are relatively low compared to other Central American countries, petty theft, such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and car break-ins can occur. Though many hotels are in safe areas, there are further measures you can take.

To minimize the risk of becoming a victim of crime, travelers should take precautions such as keeping valuables secure and out of sight, avoiding displaying signs of wealth, and staying vigilant in busy or unfamiliar environments. We recommend locking all valuables in your hotel safe whenever you can, and never leaving anything of value in your vehicle.

It's advisable to research safe neighborhoods and accommodations, use reputable transportation services, and avoid walking alone at night. Travelers should also be cautious when using ATMs and refrain from carrying large amounts of cash.

These are all basic precautions that one should take anywhere, and Costa Rica isn't particularly worse than most places. But it's not Dubai or Singapore either, and travelers not wanting to deal with anything along these lines should reconsider coming to Costa Rica or Latin America.

Tourist Crowds, Overdevelopment, and Environmental Impact

Costa Rica is a small country and the majority of tourists visit a relatively small number of areas, sometimes creating overcrowded bottlenecks which impact travelers and locals alike. Popular destinations like Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve often experience high volumes of tourists, leading sometimes to congestion, long lines, and limited availability for accommodations and activities. This overcrowding not only detracts from the visitor experience but also puts strain on local infrastructure and natural resources.

The rapid growth of tourism in recent years has also led to concerns about its effects on local communities and culture. In some cases, the influx of tourists has driven up prices, leading to gentrification and displacement of local residents. The overemphasis on catering to tourists' preferences can result in the commodification of culture and loss of authenticity in some areas.

On top of these issues, despite Costa Rica's best efforts in terms of sustainable practices in tourism, some environmental impact is always inevitable. Deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction can all pose a threat to Costa Rica's delicate ecosystems and biodiversity. To address these challenges, sustainable tourism practices and responsible travel initiatives are essential to mitigate the negative effects of overcrowding. Costa Rica is good at addressing these challenges, but some travelers might feel it's better to help ease the strain by choosing other types of destinations.

Weighing the Pros and Cons of Visiting Costa Rica

Weighing the Pros and Cons of Visiting Costa Rica

Overall, Costa Rica is an amazing destination with a diverse range of attractions and experiences to offer travelers. The country's favorable climate, beautiful natural landscapes, rich biodiversity, and commitment to sustainability make it an appealing choice for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and immersion in nature. It's also easy to get to and easy to get around once here.

But it's also worth considering the drawbacks. The higher cost of travel, particularly in comparison to other Central American countries, can make Costa Rica unrealistic for budget-conscious travelers. Further concerns about crime, overcrowding in tourist hotspots, and the impact of tourism on local communities and infrastructure can also play a role in dissuading travel to Costa Rica.

At the end of the day, whether Costa Rica works for you or not depends on your preferences and priorities. If you prioritize sustainability and environmental conservation, then Costa Rica offers unparalleled opportunities for exploration and discovery. However, if budget constraints, safety concerns, or a desire to avoid crowded tourist areas are significant considerations for you, it may be worth exploring alternative destinations, although it's always worth talking to us about traveling at less busy times and visiting less busy areas.
