Traveling Between Costa Rican Destinations
Chances are that if you’re planning a vacation to Costa Rica, you’ll be splitting your time between at least two destinations. Costa Rica simply offers too much variety for most people to stay in one place the entire time.
The rainforests, wildlife, and adventure experiences of the interior are often a few hours away from the coasts and beach communities. Spending a few nights in each allows visitors to experience both sides of the country without feeling rushed. This also raises the question of how to get around Costa Rica efficiently. Traveling by road is how most visitors move between destinations in Costa Rica, though there are several ways to reach your destination.
Private and Shared Ground Transfers
Many of our clients opt for private ground transfers, which offer a comfortable, door-to-door experience with professional drivers and the flexibility to stop along the way. Others choose shared shuttle services, which operate on set schedules between major destinations and can be a practical option for travelers balancing comfort and cost.
Car Rental
Renting a car is another common approach, particularly for those who enjoy driving and want the freedom to explore independently. This option offers flexibility but also requires navigating local road conditions and committing to longer driving days. Public buses are the most economical way to travel and are widely used throughout the country, although journeys tend to take longer and often involve multiple connections.
Domestic Flights
Travelers also often consider flying around. Costa Rica has a well-established domestic flight network, operating on smaller aircraft (aka puddle jumpers) that hop around the country connecting cities. Some of them reach remote jungle airstrips that offer an Indiana Jones-style sense of adventure to passengers.
While great fun to experience, these flights work well when traveling to and from major cities and international airports, but not so much between rural airstrips. These are often some of the most popular destinations for travelers, too. This is why we offer an exclusive direct flight between Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio.
An Exclusive Flight from Arenal to Manuel Antonio
We decided to add convenience to one of Costa Rica’s most popular multi-destination itineraries and partnered exclusively with domestic airline Adventure Air to provide a direct morning flight between the Arenal Volcano area and the Central Pacific coast.
This service is not publicly sold and is not available through other travel agencies. It exists specifically for our clients who want a faster, more streamlined way to move between regions without routing through San José or spending a full day on the road.
The flight departs each morning from the local airstrip near La Fortuna (the main town near Arenal Volcano) at 9:40 AM. It arrives at Quepos Airstrip on the Central Pacific coast roughly 40 minutes later. Instead of arriving in the afternoon after a long journey, travelers reach their next destination by mid-morning, with most of the day still ahead of them.
How the Flight Operates
This service operates as a single scheduled morning departure with a maximum capacity of six passengers. All travelers on board are our clients, and the flight may include more than one travel party.
If one group happens to fill all available seats, the flight will be exclusive to that group. On some days, fewer seats are booked, and the flight may end up being exclusive to a single party even if the group is smaller. Because seating is assigned based on availability, it is not possible to guarantee a private flight for smaller parties.
What remains consistent is the experience: a short, direct flight, a limited number of passengers, and a smooth transition between two major regions of the country.
The Flight Experience
Adventure Air uses both Cessna and Piper Navajo aircraft to operate this exclusive route. These planes are commonly used for domestic travel in Costa Rica and well suited to short regional routes.
Check-in takes place at the local airstrip in Arenal shortly before departure, and the process is straightforward. Upon arrival, luggage is immediately available, with no waiting at a baggage carousel, allowing travelers to continue on to their hotel or next activity without delay.
This direct flight works well for travelers who want to maximize their time in Costa Rica. It’s a popular choice for couples, families, and small groups who prefer to limit long travel days, as well as for travelers with shorter itineraries who want to experience both the interior and the coast without feeling rushed.
It’s also a good fit for repeat visitors who have already experienced long overland journeys and are looking for a different way to move between regions.
In short, this Arenal-to-Manuel Antonio flight exists to give travelers more choice in how to get between these destinations. It’s a service we offer selectively, and one that’s available only through our travel agency.
Why Arenal and Manuel Antonio Are So Often Paired Together
Arenal and Manuel Antonio are two of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations, and they work particularly well together within a single itinerary. For many travelers, this pairing offers a balanced introduction to the country without trying to cover too much ground.
Arenal Volcano: The Adventure Capital
The Arenal Volcano area is known for its rainforest scenery, wildlife, hot springs, waterfalls, and a wide range of activities that make people refer to it as the Adventure Capital of Costa Rica. It’s an active part of the trip and often where travelers spend their first few nights exploring Costa Rica’s interior.
Manuel Antonio: Rainforest and Beach
Manuel Antonio provides a contrasting coastal experience. Beaches, ocean views, and one of the country’s most accessible national parks create a more relaxed pace, while still offering excellent wildlife viewing and easy access to nature.
Moving from Arenal to Manuel Antonio creates a natural progression from inland adventure to beach downtime. That contrast is one of the main reasons this combination has become one of the most frequently recommended itineraries we plan for our clients.
