When it comes to freshwater fishing, Costa Rica is unbeatable. With so many packages to choose from, all you’ll have to do is figure out which part of the amazing country you want to visit, and get ready to regale your friends with incredible stories about landing the huge fish that attract anglers from across the globe!
Are you ready to test your skills against one of the most challenging sportfish in the world? Come to Tortuguero and fish for the magnificent tarpon. The largest member of the herring family, can be found in abundance off Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, making it an ideal fish for sport fishing enthusiasts.
Sometimes referred to as the “silver king,” tarpon is often overlooked in favor of the distinctive blue marlin. However, the tarpon that swims in the waters off Tortuguero is a considerable challenge for even the most experienced angler. Tarpon in this region routinely weigh in excess of 100 pounds, and specimens almost twice that size are not uncommon. Peak months in the canals are January-May and September-October for inshore.
For this reason, if you’re planning on embarking on a Costa Rican vacation to fish for them, you’ll need an experienced guide. The waters of Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge and Tortuguero provide an excellent hunting ground. On any normal day, you could catch more than 20 tarpon between the two days dedicated to pursuing these powerful and elusive fish.
Bring home a dozen tarpon or return to shore with tales of the one that got away. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to cast your lines for a variety of other fish including snook, snapper, rainbow bass and alligator gar.
There are many ways to hook into a Tarpon and we offer them all. Whether you want to jig, fish with bait or try your hand at hooking a Tarpon on a fly, we will do our best to make sure you do. We offer in fishing packages designed to not only provide you with the opportunity to land one of these magnificent fish, and enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery in Costa Rica.
