Are you ready to test your skills against one of the most challenging sportfish in the world? Come to Tortuguero and fish for the magnificent tarpon. The largest member of the herring family, can be found in abundance off Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, making it an ideal fish for sportfishing enthusiasts.
Sometimes referred to as the “silver king,” tarpon is often overlooked in favor of the distinctive blue marlin. However, the tarpon that swims in the waters off Tortuguero is a considerable challenge for even the most experienced angler. Tarpon in this region routinely weigh in excess of 100 pounds, and specimens almost twice that size are not uncommon. Peak months in the canals are January-May and September-October for inshore.
For this reason, if you’re planning on embarking on a Costa Rican vacation to fish for them, you’ll need an experienced guide. The waters of Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge and Tortuguero provide an excellent hunting ground. On any normal day, you could catch more than 20 tarpon between the two days dedicated to pursuing these powerful and elusive fish.
