Santa Elena Reserve

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the first community managed reserves in the country, is world famous for its rich variety of animal and plant species. Set at the 5000 ft altitude of the Cordillera de Tilarán, the Reserve receives warm winds from the oceans which combined with the rain precipitation make for the ideal place for life to thrive. Populated by hundreds of plant species, trees and fauna, the Reserve is Eden-like in its beauty. Competition for growing space is so intense that trunks and branches are almost entirely covered with a variety of epiphytes, lichens, liverworts, bryophytes and mosses.  The lush cloud forest canopy of Santa Elena is thus home to many species of insects, amphibians, and mammals which never even come down to the forest floor.
