From milking cows to distilling liquor to chocolate making, this is an adventure through Costa Rica’s history that you can touch!
Traditional & Eco-Friendly Farming in Arenal
A van picks you up and takes you to the town of Agua Azul, three miles from La Fortuna. The tour takes place in an eco-friendly farm owned by a local family. First, have a welcome snack and learn about their sustainable practices and their efforts to preserve some of Costa Rica’s oldest agricultural traditions.
Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work! There is a series of activities for you to cover.
Sit on a stool and learn to milk a cow the old-fashioned way. There is chance for you to also feed some of the farm animals, like calves and chickens.
Then it’s time to taste various home-made products while learning about an artisanal liquor distillation process that uses a tool called “alambique.” Try the liquor along with chocolate and the milk you just got from the cow!
Hands-On Food Making in Costa Rica
Afterward, do some more work as you learn how the farmers of old extracted juice from sugar cane. Later you can taste it as well, either alone or with spearmint or other products from the farm.
Head to an archeological ranch on-site, where there are traditional indigenous tools that you use to make chocolate from cocoa beans. Stroll after that through the farm’s orchid and garden full of medicinal plants that Costa Rican grandmas have been using for centuries.
Finish the tour with lunch, which includes various traditional Costa Rican options like cheese, tortillas, “picadillo”, and more. Then return to your hotel to continue your vacation!
