Sloth Spotting Hike
Visit a Private Reserve and Search for Two and Three-Toed Sloths.
‘Sloth Spotting’ is perfect for:
Nature-loving families, couples, and groups who want a leisurely walk along the rainforest while admiring nature.
One of Costa Rica’s most iconic creatures is the sloth, and most visitors want the chance to spot one in the wild.
Visit a family-owned reserve and take a stroll through the forest to see as many as you can while learning about the local flora and fauna.
A Walk in the Rainforest for All Ages
Sitting just outside La Fortuna, Sloth Territory is a reserve owned by a local family. A van takes you from your hotel to the property, where several acres are dedicated to the rainforest near the river La Havana.
Follow your guide as they explain the different characteristics of the rainforest and the complex relationship between the vegetation and its wildlife. The path is easily walkable, and it is surrounded by trees of all kinds.
Watch Out for Sloths
Costa Rica has two species of sloth: the two-toed, known for the black spots in its eyes, and the three-toed, which has a pink snout. Both live in the property along with tropical birds like toucans and reptiles like iguanas.
They can be found curled in a ball while they sleep, or hanging from branches as they feed. If you’re lucky, you can catch them in action! Be ready to snap a picture and try to find as many as you can. Finish the experience with a light snack before returning to your hotel.
