Palo Verde National Park & Boat Ride Overview

The Palo Verde National Park is an area of tropical dry forest and wetlands surrounding the Tempisque River in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The wetlands are one of the essential spots for birds in Costa Rica, a must-do for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. The 184 square kilometer park has at least 12 different habitats within its borders, including the most significant remaining tropical dry forest in Costa Rica, mangroves, swamps, saltwater and freshwater lagoons, and marshes.

Your adventure begins when you are picked up from your hotel after breakfast and taken to the Tempisque River. Then, you'll board a boat and enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour ride. The Tempisque River and the Palo Verde National Park wetlands provide shelter to a fantastic array of bird species. Look out for American Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, Boat-billed Herons, Tiger Herons, and the Jabiru Stork - the giant bird in Central America and a special treat for birdwatchers!

Your guide will also point out other animals from the boat, too. It's possible to see howler monkeys, green iguanas, coatis, anteaters, and crocodiles. After the boat ride, you'll receive a wonderful traditional Costa Rican lunch in a local restaurant before heading back to your hotel.

This Palo Verde National Park river cruise is suitable for any age, as long as you love wildlife and birdwatching. It's not a physically challenging tour. It does get hot on the Tempisque River, though, so we highly recommend wearing cool, comfortable clothes.
