Posted by richardb under: Sport .

Jacques VabreThe 9th Transat Jacques Vabre competition began yesterday as 20 competing boats (14 Monohulls and 6 Mulithulls) left Le Havre in Northern France and started on their 9000 mile journey across the Atlantic to Limon, Costa Rica.

The boats left port yesterday with a weak wind behind them with Actual  and Crêpes Whaou  leading the Mulithulls, however Actual capsized after 4 hours in the water and will be towed back to the port of Cherbourg later today.  Yves Blevec is said to be devastated after the capsizing.

The current leaders are:

Monohulls - 1) Fonica, 2) Groupe Bell, 3) Akena Verandas

Multihulls - 1) Crepes Wahaou, 2) Region Aquitaine - Port Medoc

Current weather conditions predict Force 5/6 gales and waves will increase to 2 meters in height, this will be a difficult day for the sailors.  It is expected that things will deteriorate more as they further cross the Atlantic.

We will keep you posted.
