The first leg of the Costa Rica qualifying match for the last spot for the World Cup in South Africa 2010 will be played at the Saprissa stadium in Tibas, San Jose, Costa Rica. However Costa Rica will have a huge advantage at home and it is not just the home crowd that will be helping them. The Saprissa ground is a synthetic grass that is approved by FIFA and can be used for International matches. Some other teams have fallen victim to Costa Rica playing on this type of surface because the ball moves a lot faster over the surface and also it can be slightly slipier for players.
Renee Simoes the current Costa Rica coach said that the surface will give Costa Rica the upper hand. Simoes saw his automatic chance to take Costa Rica to the World Cup slip away due to Costa Rica’s lack of defense in the final minutes of the match in Chicago against the US.
Simoes stated that ‘the leg against Uruguay will be very difficult. Playing with 70,000 people behind Uruguay is not easy, it’s a lot of people. ”
All of Costa Rica will be hoping that they go to their 3rd World Cup in 2010.
