Liberia Costa Rica is the capital city of the Guanacaste province, and home to the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) with flights arriving from Houston, Atlanta, Miami, New York and Los Angeles. Often overlooked as another ‘stop-over’ city, Liberia actually has a lot to offer in the way of typical culture. This vaquero (cowboy) town offers a well preserved look at colonial architecture and a laid back country lifestyle. It is a great place to spend a day or two before heading off to Rincón de la Vieja National Park (45 min drive) or the Guanacaste beaches (30 min to 2 hours).

Braulio Carrillo National Park is one of the best places in the country to enjoy primary tropical rainforest within close proximity to San Jose. The park is only about 45 minutes east of the city. The drive to the park is easy with paved highway the entire way.

For nature lovers who don’t mind very basic accommodations plan a visit to the La Selva Biological Station. The station is located in the Northern part of Costa Rica in the Caribbean lowlands near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. The station consists of 3,900 acres of both tropical rainforest and disturbed land and is bordered on the south by Braulio Carillo National Park.

Sugar Beach or Playa Pan D’Azucar as it is called is Spanish is referred to as one of the most pristine beaches in Costa Rica. The sand is a black volcanic sand and it is lined with palm trees in a crescent shape.
