Monteverde Cloud Forest
Monteverde cloud forest is a unique area that you must visit. Santa Elena is the small town that one passes through before reaching Montverde’s forest. Monteverde is considered as one of the most amazing, breathtaking wildlife reserves in the tropics. You can find more than 90 species of mammals (several species of wild cats), over 350 bird species, and thousands of species of plants, tall trees and stunning orchids.
The climate is characterized by its 100% humidity throughout the year, which is one of the main reasons you can find a large variety of biodiversity, vegetation and wildlife including the star of all birds: the resplendent Quetzal.
You can find lots of tours and activities to do during your time here. Rafting, sky walks, canopy tours, a Tarzan swing, hiking in the forest, bird watching, Coffee Tours and horseback riding adventures are all easy to find from local tour operators or your travel agent.
You can also hike to some waterfalls, visit the butterfly garden and serpentarium or just relax listening to the sounds of nature, Monteverde is actually a quiet place to visit, and we guarantee you will be satisfied with this visit. The main town has a very warm feeling as the area depends on tourism and will welcome you in to get to know the area.
This may also be because the area was originally settled by Quaker immigrants who set up a dairy tradition, creating the country’s famous Monteverde cheese factory. They also had a strong role in protecting the natural wonders of their new home.
The local community established the Monteverde nature preserve by in 1972 to protect this celestial green zone. In order to keep this wonderful place as it is - safe, clean, and pampered -the community created a group called the Monteverde Conservation League. They are a non profit association in charge and involved in the protection, reforestation and conservation of the area. They also have Volunteer Programs for foreign people who want to participate in the maintenance of this paradise on earth.
