Peninsula Papagayo
The Papagayo Gulf is rimmed with a semi-circular stretch of white sand beach that several classy all-inclusive resorts and a wealth of luxury rental properties call home. The waters in this area are calm and perfect for swimmers thanks to the protective Península Santa Elena. Thanks to the International Liberia Airport, the best part is that you can reach these beaches within 30 minutes of arriving to the country, putting you straight into relaxation mode.
Along the coast you will find Playa del Coco, a nightlife hotspot, Ocotal, which features superb snorkeling and sport fishing and one of the cleanest and quietest beaches around and Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama, both offering calm, clean waters and relative seclusion. The northern crest of the Gulf has tremendous golden sand beaches and is home to Witch’s Rock, a world-renowned surf spot made famous by the movie The Endless Summer 2. Once you take full advantage of this area, you’ll wish your vacation here was endless too.

1. Try the famous Witch’s Rock!
This isolated surf break, only reachable by boat, is world famous. Only serious and experienced surfers may apply! Watching this world-renowned surfing action can be just as entertaining, or continue your boat tour to the secluded shores of Playa Paraíso or explore some of the many offshore islands.
2. Catch a Big One
Papagayo’s legendary waters are home to some very large fish including wahoo, tuna, dorado, red snapper, sailfish, roosterfish and the blue marlin. Several charter companies offer half and full day fishing trips including lunch and tackle with prices averaging around $500 and $800 respectively depending on the size of the boat. Enjoy a day of catch and release fishing to the beautiful backdrop of the islands and shoreline of Guanacaste.
3. Scooba Doo!
Scuba diving is one of the most popular activities in this area. Isla Catalina is a great spot near Playa Ocotal to see huge schools of rays (including the giant manta ray) while scuba diving. There are a few certified companies to guide you in your deep sea adventures.
