Isla Grande,
Panama
Isla Grande
A visit to the Spanish forts and ruins at Portobelo is reason
enough to travel to Costa Arriba. The beach that is closest to it
is Maria Chiquita, which has its own tourist center with
facilities. Playa Langosta is located some miles ahead.
Isla Grande, a few minutes farther by car, is the largest of a
series of islands in the area. Surrounded by coral reefs, it is
ideal for diving, snorkeling and surfing. It features several
hotels and excellent restaurants.
To get to Isla Grande, take a bus from Sabanitas or Portobelo to
La Guaira. From there, take a cayuco (water taxi) for a
five-minute boat ride to the island.
The Congos
The popular tradition here is the Congo drum. Congo drum playing
generally takes place during carnival, in the month of February.
