Urracá Historic Tour and Hike

Explore this Capital City and a Volcanic Forest Reserve

Learn more about the indigenous cacique featured on the Panamanian penny, the great leader named Urracá, as you immerse yourself in this historic trip in and around Santiago de Veraguas. For nine years, Urracá organized tribes from the mountains of Veraguas in order to resist the influence of the Spanish conquistadores. We will take a trip to see his statue honored in front of Escuela Normal de Santiago, a high school located in this capital city that provides exclusive training for teachers. Then, we’ll explore one of the best examples of baroque art in the country at the Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montaña. This church illustrates the trail of syncretism in the region, fusing together the new way of Spanish culture on this originally indigenous-based land that Urracá had fought so hard to protect, in the hundreds of hand-carved pieces that make up the eight altars.

Finish up your trip with a hike and swim in one of the oldest lakes in Panama, a lagoon of volcanic origin, in La Yeguada Panama Lagoon Forest Reserve. The landscape of pine trees and clear blue waters is surprisingly reminiscent of a postcard from the banks of one of Canada’s great lakes. Explore the San Juan River Canyon as we hike through this reserve, the current source of hydroelectric power for the region.
