When to Fish in Panama
Panama fishing is great year round thanks to the warm waters and direct access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Many fishermen do prefer the winter and spring months from December through May to take advantage of the dry weather and clear skies that are characteristic of the season as well as the increased number of large migratory species that gather offshore.
In the “off season” from June to November, sport fishing opportunities will most likely center around offshore species like roosterfish, amberjack, sierra and barracuda. Wahoo also have their peak season from as early as May through November. There is also the chance of catching jacks, pompanos, large groupers and corvine during this time.
From December through May, sport fishing in the regions of Pedasi, the Pearl Islands and Piñas Bay picks up in large part thanks to a cold saltwater current that moves north from South America, causing a vertical current as warm bottom water moves to the surface. This also corresponds with the Panama dry season, making it the favorite season among fishermen who can expect to catch giant yellowfin tuna, marlin, bluefin trevally, mahi mahi and more!
