Renting a car in Panama can add a degree of freedom and adventure to your trip that you would not experience otherwise; however, precautions must be taken to avoid any mishaps that could put a damper on your vacation. A car is your most convenient option if you wish to explore the Pacific Coast beaches within several hours of
Panama City, though for more distant destinations like David,
Boquete, Bocas del Toro or any islands, it could become more of a chore than a convenience. In such cases, or if you intend to stay at each destination for several days, we recommend taking a domestic flight or reserving ground transfers in advance.
Car Rental Tips:
The major transportation route that traverses Panama from Costa Rica to the Darien Jungle is the Pan-American Highway. This is the main artery of Panama travel and is very good condition, well marked and mainly flat and straight. All Pacific Beaches can be reached by turning off the Pan-American onto smaller roads where you might expect rougher conditions ranging from a few potholes to dirt and stones. Be sure to inquire in advance if you are uncertain about the road conditions en route to your destination.
Navigating the one-way heavily trafficked streets of Panama City is not something that comes highly recommended. Panamanian drivers are some of the most aggressive in the region when it comes to traffic, passing and pulling out in front of you despite the fact that laws of space and time are against them. Surprisingly, there are few accidents in the city as this also leads to quick response time and skilled maneuvering.
Red lights flash helplessly as the laws of survival rule the road. However, as a visitor you are best advised to follow posted speed limits and street signals as underpaid traffic cops, while friendly, are known for seeking compensation for waiving traffic infractions whether you know what you did wrong or not. Be advised as this is common practice in the country, and $10 will generally suffice, but DO NOT offer money until it is blatantly solicited.
If renting a car in Panama, also make sure you've allowed yourself plenty of travel time between destinations. The mileage can be misleading when planning short trips in a foreign country. Panama has a decently modern road system, but once you get off the highway, it’s always a bit less predictable. Bear in mind that you will probably average speeds of 70 to 100 km per hour on highways and 40 to 50 on back roads. Also, please be advised of the risk of leaving unattended luggage or valuables in your rental car. Make sure that such items remained locked away in the trunk out of sight, or take them with you or leave them in your hotel.
