Description
La Fortuna, which was once the heart of farm country in Costa Rica, was forever changed with the 1968 eruption of Volcano Arenal. Despite claiming lives and livestock and changing the landscape of the town forever, the eruption of what is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world also lead to the development of a thriving tourism industry in La Fortuna. This led to paved roads, ecologically conscious development and the constant sprouting of new hotels in the area.
The town has maintained a country feel despite the increase in visitors who flock to see the glowing lava flow that is a constant fixture on the flank of the volcano. Natural thermal rivers gave way to the creation of luxury spas boasting volcanic mud baths and natural saunas. The picturesque Arenal Lake is also a popular destination for fishing and wind surfing.
Other nature-based activities include hiking and horseback riding trips to the volcano, local waterfalls and hot springs, canopy zip line tours and white water rafting. Luxury hotels practice sustainability and provide tranquil settings that put you in touch with nature, making this an adventure and eco-tourism paradise.
