The Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport was named after a past Costa Rican President after his wife dedicated the land to construct the airport facilities. It is located in Liberia, the capital Guanacaste, and is credited in large part for the recent influx of tourism development in the area. It is a popular hub for visitors wishing to explore the northern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.

The independent minded traveler may find the freedom of renting a car in Costa Rica absolutely necessary to the enjoyment of their trip. Other options for transportation through the country include public buses (economical but time consuming), private shuttles (pricey but fast and gives you the freedom of stopping for pictures, bathroom, etc.) and domestic flights (convenient and less expensive than ground transfers at times!). If you have considered these other options and waded through excessive information on the dangers of the roads in Costa Rica and still decided on renting a car, I commend you and your adventurous soul. Costa Rica beaches are as varied as they are plentiful, from the volcanic black sands of Playa Hermosa, Jaco to the sparkling white of Punta Leona and Playa Conchal. There are bay side beaches like Tambor on the Gulf of Nicoya and Puerto Jimenez on Golfo Dulce that attract mating whales and offer great marine life viewing opportunities.
