Tortuguero offers a spectacular array of fauna. This includes more than 300 types of birds, 57 amphibian species, 111 reptiles including 3 species of marine turtles, 60 types of mammals, and 13 of the 16 endangered species living in Costa Rica. These include manatee, jaguars, tapires, "tigrillos," pumas, and otters. Some of the most commonly seen birds are toucans, herons, carpenters, oropendolas, hawks, ducks needle, martin fisherman, jacanas, and parrots.
