Costa Rican vacations (CRV) has officially launched an initiative to drive the luxury travel agency along the path to sustainability. Spearheaded by Operations Manager Jennifer Duran, the first step of the project entails minimizing in-house waste production and electricity usage, revision of company policies and an awareness campaign directed at employees. To keep the company on track, CRV will join a network of like-minded tourism operators by participating in conferences and sharing new ideas and successes.

Length of Time Needed to Open a Business in Costa Rica Hurt the Country’s Ranking.
Costa Rica moved up the Tourism Competitiveness ranking this year, nabbing second place in all of Latin America, second only to Barbados. Despite being ranked 118th out of 133 nations for its roads, which are worse than in poverty stricken countries like Burkina Faso and Zambia, Costa Rica fell back on its natural resources and government support for tourism to secure 42nd place in the world, according to a report by the World Economic Forum that was presented yesterday in Switzerland.

Costa Rica to Participate in Worldwide Anti-Globe Warming Initiative.
The lights in the Plaza de la Democracia and other iconic sites and companies in Costa Rica will be turned off for one hour on March 28 to represent the country’s solidarity with the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Earth Hour 2009. The worldwide initiative aims to symbolize the decision to consume less and more consciously and give people an hour to reflect on global warming. It is hoped that more than 1 billion people in over 370 cities throughout the world will participate.

Improved Computing, Customer Service and Language Skills for Tourism Employees.
Costa Rica’s National Learning Institute announced that it will be providing 1,500 tourism employees throughout the country with scholarships of up to 200,000 colones ($360) to continue their education in this field. The training that the scholarships will pay for comes as part of President Oscar Arias’s “Shield Plan”, which was designed to protect Costa Rica from the effects of the economic crisis. This particular initiative hopes to give tourism employees the tools necessary to conserve their jobs.
