One of the common misconceptions about Costa Rica is that the green season is too wet for a good Costa Rican vacation. In our opinion, this could not be further from the truth. It is true that the months of May through October (known here as the 'green season') are wetter than the rest of the year, with the heaviest rain falling in August and September. However, during the 'green season' the mornings in Costa Rica are usually warm and sunny, with afternoon showers from about 2pm-5pm and cool clear evenings. Of course there are days when it rains more, but there are also days without even a drop of precipitation. 

The bottom line: traveling during the 'green season' does not mean wading through floods and never being able to wear that new bathing suit. The 'green season' is also the low season as far as prices and numbers of tourists are concerned, which makes it an ideal time to visit. Just a few days after the rain ends the five-month draught in Costa Rica, the entire landscape turns an emerald green. Flowers and trees bloom, plants return to their full size and color, and the wildlife is more active.

The afternoon showers are welcome by most locals and seasoned travelers; they cool down the hot days, make for excellent sleeping and relaxation conditions and create a sweet, fresh, tropical air that is unforgettable.
