Tarpon here average 100 lbs and not uncommon to get up to 200 lbs.
Length: 5-6 nights
Price: from $1,800 – $3,000 pp
Places to Visit: Tortuguero
Fishing For: Tarpon, snook, jacks
Day 1: Fly into San Jose, Costa Rica where you will be met inside the airport and taken right to your waiting private transfer. You’ll spend your first night here in the capital city at the beautiful Grano de Oro. Located downtown and near the main central park, this converted Victorian Mansion is one of San Jose’s best hotels. A first class restaurant, luxurious accommodations, and roof top jacuzzis make this the perfect place to spend your first night in Costa rica.
Day 2: You will be picked early in the morning to start your journey to Tortuguero on the Caribbean Coast. Located in the 400,000 acre Barra de Colorado nature reserve, Tortuguero is only accessible only by boat or plane. Primarily known as one of the world’s most important sea turtle nesting sites, Tortuguero is also home to some world class tarpon and snook fishing. You’ll travel by van until you reach the edge of the park where you will then switch into a covered banana boat to finish your journey with a boat road through the canals until you reach Tortuguero. Keep an eye out for crocodiles, caiman, tucans, and manatee that all find refuge in the national park. Once you arrive you’ll settle into Tortuguero’s only nicest hotel, the Hotel Manatus. With just 16 rooms total, this is the only luxury hotel in the area featuring AC, hardwood floors, private baths with hot showers, a great pool, and an a la carte menu.
Day 3: You’ll head out for your first day of tarpon fishing with our local guide, Elvin. Better known as Primo, he is hands down one of the best tarpon guides in the entire country. Primo grew up in the area and has been fishing for over 20 years so whether it’s in the fresh water canals or the Caribbean Sea he will put you on the fish. Troll, sight cast, or jig your way to tarpon bliss.
Day 4: Head out for another full day of tarpon & snook fishing. It is not uncommon to get double digit tarpon hook ups in a day. Depending on weather and sea conditions you can use this day to fish the freshwater canals for snook, snapper, machaca, rainbow bass, and even aligator gar. As the boat is entirely yours for the day you can even spend the morning in the canals and then spend the afternoon out on the ocean again.
Day 5: Last day of fishing! If you have caught your fill of tarpon try to land a snook so the Manatus Hotel can make you some fresh ceviche. Other species found in these waters are kingfish, jacks, snapper, and even sharks!
Day 6: You will board an early morning flight to return from Tortuguero back to San Jose and then take a short shuttle to the international airport for your flight home – sore muscles and all.
