Fishing on Lake Arenal

Volcano Behind, Sun Above and Fish Below. What Could be Better?

Enjoy fantastic fresh water fishing in one of the most scenic and surreal settings you may ever be in. The 33 sq mile Lake Arenal is the largest in Costa Rica and is only dwarfed by the imposing Arenal Volcano that stands over it. You will fish with master angler Tirsio Hidalgo on his professional 20’ bass boat for machaca, mojarra, tilapia, and the hard fighting guapote – or rainbow bass.

Day 1: Fly into San Jose, Costa Rica where you will be met inside the airport and taken right to your waiting private transfer. We’ll take you three hours north to see Costa Rica’s biggest and most popular volcano, Arenal. Here you’ll stay at the amazing Arenal Nayara where you’ll have amazing volcano views from your room. Regarded as the top hotel in Arenal and the ‘most romantic hotel in Central America’, you’ll spend most of your waking hours in your private Jacuzzi on the balcony.

Day 2: You will be picked early in the afternoon for the first part of your combo tour – the popular Hanging Bridges. Suspended along the canopy of the rain forest, the bridges cover more than 3,100 meters during this 3 Km hike. This will give you a up close and personal view of the incredible flora & fauna in Costa Rica. You’ll end your day with a buffet dinner and a few hours to soak in the world famous Tabacon Hot Springs. Heated by the magma in the Earth’s core, these natural springs range from 77-103 F.

Day 3: Let’s go fishing! Head out early with master angler Tirsio Hidalgo for a day of fishing on Costa Rica’s largest lake. Tirsio has over 25 years of experience fishing here and is without doubt the best angler and guide in the area, so if there are fish to be caught he’ll find them.

Day 4: More fishing! Fish near the various river mouths that empty into the lake for the aggressive machaca, nicknamed ‘mini tarpon’ for their fighting ability. You can also troll the deeper waters (40 feet or more) or giant rainbow bass.

Day 5: Hit the water, but this time in a different way – white water rafting! Experience the natural beauty and excitement of the class III-IV Rio Toro as you can see monkeys and toucans between rapids.

Day 6: One last day of fishing with Tirsio! If you haven’t landed a rainbow bass for dinner yet today is your last shot.

Day 7: We will pick you up and take you back to the SJO Airport for your international flight home.
