Costa Rica Kayak Fishing Report - June 2008
July 7th, 2008 Posted in Fishing ReportsThe green season continues to deliver superb fishing in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica so far in 2008. The green season in Costa Rica actually follows the MLB season pretty closely, and the All-Star break in baseball means we are about halfway through the green season here in Costa Rica. That’s good news to some, but bad news to us anglers who are enjoying some great fishing. Last month Bill Tuomela from Cape Canaveral, FL came down on his first trip to Costa Rica and wanted to try our kayak fishing. He is actually one of our more experienced guests to try it, but as he suspected, he was amazed by Costa Rica’s famous roosterfish and learned even more about the sport he already loved.
Bill came down on a quick, 5-day trip and took advantage of one of the ‘Green Season Specials’ at the beautiful Tamarindo Diria. On his first day in country he went out and did the regular kayak fishing trip with Ralph to ease into things and get used to what Costa Rica had to offer. After that he tried out the new tour Ralph and I have been raving about, the ‘Extreme Kayak Fishing’. This is essentially the same tour as the regular kayak fishing trip, only in this tour you load the kayaks up in a super panga and motor out to the fishing spots. This means you get there quicker and faster, can go farther and to more spots, and have more energy left to fight the fish. Finally to end his vacation here he tried out Costa Rica’s signature tour, the canopy zip-line up in the Rincon de la Vieja National Park.
As for the fishing report, even though it includes more tales of ‘the one that got away’, it was in large a huge success. In three days of kayak fishing with Ralph, Bill caught 5 roosterfish, a small grouper, and some needle fish. Even more exciting however, are the ones that got away. Bill was lucky enough to dance with a nice sized wahoo, a very large snapper, and yes, even the lady in the blue dress! So even though he missed out on some great table fare and nearly became our first kayak fishermen to land a marlin, he had a great time. Here is his comment on the trip and a great picture of one of his roosters:
Hi Chris!
I wanted to send you a couple pix of fish I caught with Ralph last week. The trip was great and the fishing was excellent! Thanks for hooking me up with Ralph. His knowledge of the fishing techniques needed in Costa Rica via kayake are first rate! I plan on doing this again as soon as I can.
