Costa Rica Green Season Specials!

June 8th, 2008 Posted in Fishing News

May 1st annually marks the start of the low season for tourism in Costa Rica which means lower rates and fantastic hotel specials.  The low season in Costa Rica runs from May 1st to to December 1st, which also coincides with the green season weather.  While sometimes referred to as ‘the rainy season’, that name tends to create a false image of monsoon rains and no sunshine which couldn’t be farther from the truth.  While it is true that afternoon rain showers are common during the green season, a typical day will start off hot and sunny and then an afternoon shower around 2-3 PM will cool things off just in time for an afternoon nap or a cold drink after a long day of fishing.  Many people who have been to Costa Rica actually prefer to travel during the green season as it means lower rates, less crowds, and the country turns a beautiful vibrant green after going five months without rain.

It is also important to note the quality of fishing during the green season.  Again many people worry that they will get monsoon rains and terrible fishing if they come during the low season, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Even though Costa Rica is a country only about the size of West Virginia, it has several different climate zones and while one area may be experiencing incredible fishing another may be slower.  For example, while September and October are the wettest months on the Pacific Coast they are the two driest months on the Caribbean Coast and the best months for tarpon fishing.  While the fishing is admittedly superior during the dry season months of December-April in the Central and South Pacific regions of Costa Rica, it is slower and the seas are often very rough up in northwest corner of Guanacaste for those same months.  Then when the afternoon rains start in May the bite slows in the Central and South Pacific and moves north to areas like Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, and the Gulf of Papagayo who enjoy their peak fishing season from May to November.  So before you ask “Am I coming at a good time for fishing?”, you should know the answer is ‘yes’ - it just depends where you go!
