Crocodile Bay Fishing Report - June 2008

June 25th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Reports | No Comments »

Almost every year the marlin show up to Crocodile Bay in time for summer vacation, and this year has been no different.  Todd Staley, the fishing director and living legend at Crocodile Bay, reports that a marlin has been seen just about every day this month.  Besides the large numbers of the ‘lady in the blue dress’, there has also been a lot of variety and a possible new IGFA record.  Jeffery Adams, 16, caught one of the biggest rock snappers ever seen in those waters. The fish was just under 17 lbs and faught for fifteen minutes. Pending verification from the IGFA, Jeffery will be in the record book for the largest all tackle catch for Barred Pargo, the fish’s official name. Read the rest of this entry »

June Fishing Report - Manuel Antonio

June 24th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Reports | No Comments »

In a month that typically showcases calm seas, afternoon rain showers, and a second marlin run, this June was not a good one for fishing in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.  At first there was a case of the dreaded “red tide”, and then Costa Rica’s first ever tropical storm, Alma.  The red tide is another name for an algal bloom,  where algae accumulate near the surface in a dense mass.  This algae is actually a single celled organism named phytoplankton which with their pigments can change color to create a red or pink floating mass.  The bad news for anglers is that the fishing is generally poor when there is a red tide.  The slow fishing may attributed to one of the causes of the red tide, agricultural run-off and water pollution.  The algal bloom has been tied to an increase in agricultural run-off and excess pollution due to more phosphates and nitrates in the water.  Whatever the case may be, the fish seem to know either by water temperature or quality to stay away when the red tide comes in. Keys to Multiple Sailfish Hook Ups

June 10th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Tips | No Comments »

By now, Costa Rica is already a well established international hot spot for sport fishing.  Billfish can be caught any month of the year, sailfish can be found on both coasts, and can all but be guaranteed during the peak season.  There are multiple international fishing tournaments from December through March and stories of boats hauling double digit numbers of sailfish in a day are not uncommon.  A surprising number of people have also been lucky enough to experience the exciting multiple hook up.  For those who are unfamiliar with this event, as the name implies it occurs when two or more sailfish are hooked up by the same boat at the same time.  This certainly involves a bit of luck with being in the right spot at the right time, but there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of this happening the next time you are out. Costa Rica Green Season Specials!

June 8th, 2008 Posted in Fishing News | No Comments »

May 1st annually marks the start of the low season for tourism in Costa Rica which means lower rates and fantastic hotel specials.  The low season in Costa Rica runs from May 1st to to December 1st, which also coincides with the green season weather.  While sometimes referred to as ‘the rainy season’, that name tends to create a false image of monsoon rains and no sunshine which couldn’t be farther from the truth.  While it is true that afternoon rain showers are common during the green season, a typical day will start off hot and sunny and then an afternoon shower around 2-3 PM will cool things off just in time for an afternoon nap or a cold drink after a long day of fishing.  Many people who have been to Costa Rica actually prefer to travel during the green season as it means lower rates, less crowds, and the country turns a beautiful vibrant green after going five months without rain.  Read the rest of this entry »

Tamarindo Fishing Report - May 2008

June 5th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Reports | No Comments »

As we turned our calenders to May, the green season in Costa Rica arrived as scheduled.  While some loathe the afternoon rain showers of the low season, anglers in Guanacaste welcome it with open arms as it signals the start of the peak fishing season in the area.  The peak season for fishing in the Central and South Pacific regions of Costa Rica coincides with the dry season months of December-April, however the best fishing in the Northwest Pacific region of Costa Rica is actually during the green season months from May-November.  Experts agree there are two main reasons for that - 1) better sea conditions and 2) more bait fish to attract the game fish. April Kayak Fishing Report - Costa Rica

May 15th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Reports | No Comments »

April saw another succesful month of kayak fishing in Costa Rica.  For the first time in a year I had the pleasure of making it back up to Guanacaste to go fishing with our good friend Ralph Solano.  My brother Eric, who was getting in one last vacation before heading off to Washington DC, and I went fishing with Ralph on April 1st out of Ocotal and had a good day.  It was my brother’s first time kayak fishing and although he has never been a big fisherman, he did enjoy himself.  To read about our day you can check out an earlier post of mine - http://www.vacationscostarica.com/fishing/blog/?p=109#more-109. Fishing Prohibited in Parts of Costa Rica

May 9th, 2008 Posted in Fishing News | No Comments »

Last week Incopesca made official the stoppage of fishing in the Gulf of Nicoya.  The move was made by the Costa Rican Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Incopesca) to prevent overfishing in the area and to allow the fish to reproduce successfully so the industry remains strong.  The ban will be in effect for May, June, and then again in October.  The reason for the ban in this area is because the protected Gulf of Nicoya makes for the perfect breeding spot for everything from whales to sardines.  It’s deep yet calm waters, many islands, and several rivers make for the perfect habitat for breeding and feeding. About Costa Rica’s Roosterfish

April 27th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Tips | 1 Comment »

One of the most popular gamefish in Costa Rica is the roosterfish. While thousands of people come to Costa Rica for their shot at landing a trophy marlin or sailfish, experienced anglers who are looking for real excitement come down for roosterfish. This beautiful, bully of a fish not only offers quality with amazing strength and long fights but quantity as it can be found all year long on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.  This beautiful, bully of a fish not only offers quality with amazing strength and long fights but quantity as it can be found all year long on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.  From the Osa Peninsula to Manuel Antonio & Jaco the rooterfish are plentiful, but perhaps more than anywhere the Gulf of Papagayo is home to the largest numbers of roosterfish in Costa Rica. The Amazing Peace Lodge & La Paz Waterfall Gardens

April 15th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Hotels Reviews | No Comments »

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the amazing grounds of the La Paz Waterfall Gardens for the second time.  I had been there once before about 2.5 years ago, but I was pleasently surprised by all of the improvements and new exhibits found there that it was as exciting as going for the first time.  Located about one hour and fifteen minutes from San Jose, everything from the drive up into the mountains to the smell of the fresh air makes the trip well worth your time.  From the entrance you move through a huge aviary, one of the world’s largest hummingbird gardens, a monkey exhibit, hummingbird garden, serpentarium, frog exhibit, big cat house, traditional Costa Rican ox-cart & ranch, and finally the famous La Paz Waterfall Gardens.  Whether you are there to stay or just passing through on a day trip, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens is the perfect place to see a huge number of Costa Rica’s famous wildlife all in one spot. 2008 Los Sueños Fishing Tournament Results!

April 8th, 2008 Posted in Fishing Reports | No Comments »

The 2008 Los Sueños Signature Billfish Series results are finally in and are jaw-dropping once again this year.  The two part annual fishing tournament held near Jaco at the gorgeous Los Sueños Resort & Marina (http://www.vacationscostarica.com/fishing/marriott_suenos.html) was held between January 9-12 and March 12-15.  This year’s tournament saw a total of 45 different boats compete over both of the three day tournaments.  The tournament scoring was based on 500 points for a successful catch and release of any marlin and 100 points for each sailfish.  The cash prize was dependent on the total number of boats that entered each tournament, but was to be divided up with 50% going to first place, 30% to second place, and 20% to third place.  The Los Sueños also offered a guaranteed $50,000 cash prize to   the boat with the most billfish points accumulated over both series.
