The area of La Fortuna is located 2 and a half hours Northwest from San Jose. The area is famed for the Arenal Volcano, which is a perfect cone shaped Volcano that is the most active in Central America, and second most active in the world. It’s constant small explosions of lava draws tourists from all over, and just driving around it you will notice the vast variety of hotels and resorts that fight for the best location and view around it. One of the advantages of being in a volcanic zone is the thermal hot springs that are easily the best in the country, espacially the Tabacon hotsprings.

The town of La Fortuna itself is a tipical little ‘Tico’ town that has been been strongly influenced by tourism. Just strolling down the highstreet you can see the numerous tourist shops and endless tour operators. However the looming Volcano at the end of the street is very impressive and makes for great photos.
The climate is much more humid than the Capital as it sits on a lower level, so expect to sweat, and around the green season it maybe hard to view the Volcano in all it’s glory but with a little patience at some point in the day the clouds should break for good view. It is well worth the wait for a night viewing of the volcano as the lava flows down its slops. A real must see when visiting Costa Rica.
